REMEMBERING OUR DEAR FRIEND TIMOTHY SYLVIA Tim and his wife, Pat, at ALF fundraising gala Tim, Pat, Mike Amster, Susan Stone and Chris Battat 10/29/46- 6/28/09 _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Tim Sylvia, the consummate teammate, running partner and friend to all of us…a gentleman who will be missed by all that had the opportunity to know him and all those that did not have the opportunity to know him. Tim, it will not be fun running the 114th marathon without you but I will be running for you and I know your spirit will be with me on every run and I will think of all those great memories and times we shared together…I was so lucky to have had you as a friend… Tim, I love you and miss you! I am doing it for Tim! Barry, the Liver Guy ~ Barry Chait ________________________________________________________________________________________________ It is with great sadness that we notify the members of our RFR community about the untimely passing of Tim Sylvia this weekend. Many of you know Tim from his years of involvement with RFR and will be shocked by this news. He has been the picture of health and heartiness and ran the marathon with us just a few years ago. But just a month ago he developed abdominal pain, was hospitalized, and despite extensive efforts on the part of his kind and talented physicians, he succumbed to an aggressive tumor of the pancreas after a very short but valiant battle. For those of you who don't know Tim, he has been a longtime member and supporter of RFR and ALF, having run six marathons with us and raised untold numbers of dollars for research. Tim led the Run for Research team as Runner's Council Chairman and after stepping down from that position continued to support us through participation at our meetings and superb advice to the Council. His help was intergral to our successful growth to the major team we are today. Tim also joined the Board of Directors of the Liver Foundation, where he served as a board member and also as Treasurer for over five years. Without his leadership we would not be the steadfast and strong Chapter we are today. Tim was a kind, gentle person, who gained your trust through his tactful honesty and omnipresent reliability. He was well-liked by everybody who had the privilege of knowing him. His words were delivered softly but always carried important insight and helped us make logical and effective decisions. He lead through example, never fiat or force. And he always made sure that the details were attended to. He passed peacefully, only after knowing that everything was properly taken care of before he left this world. His wonderful wife, Pat, helped him take care of those details. She has been his loving partner for nearly three decades and never left his bedside through this illness, except to take over for Tim in caring for their aging parents. Pat has been a tireless volunteer supporter of RFR as well, and it is because of her inspirational help that her name is attached to the annual Volunteer of the Year Award. We all know her as an incredibly organized, energetic, and caring woman with a fathomless well of inner strength. She has dipped deeply into that well through this difficult month. I hope you will all think of her in your prayers and send her strength. ~ Dr. Doug Horst If you would like to send a note to the family, stay connected to the 2010 RFR Team or would like information about running the 2010 Boston Marathon® on behalf of Tim please email Jen Fluder at jfluder@liverfoundation.org. For over two decades we have helped thousands of runners train for and compete in the historic Boston Marathon while raising critical funds in the fight against liver disease. In 2008, our 248 runners raised over $1.1 million in critical funds for the American Liver Foundation. Whether you are a first-time marathoner or a running veteran, we invite you to join this extraordinary group of volunteers from all over the United States as we set our sights even higher for the 113th Boston Marathon on April 20, 2009. Applications for our 2010 team will be available in early September. Check back this summer for updates.
