About the Cause

Our mission at the American Liver Foundation (ALF) is to facilitate, advocate and promote education, support and research for the prevention, treatment and cure of liver disease.

Although liver disease is among the ten major causes of death in the United States, there was no national voluntary health agency devoted exclusively to combating liver diseases until 1976, when the ALF was formed by a consortium of doctors from the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease (AASLD).

Since 1979, the Research Awards Program has provided more than $20.1 million for research. More than 650 qualified scientists and physicians have pursued careers in liver disease research and treatment as a result of receiving ALF and AASLD grants early in their careers.

In addition to research funding the ALF promotes education and detection efforts through:

  • Preventative screenings
  • Vital vaccinations education
  • Community events
  • Educational seminars
  • Toll-free HelpLine 1-800-GO-LIVER
  • Online information

As the organization has continues to grow an emphasis has been put on taking a leading role in advocating on behalf of the millions of Americans living with liver disease at the state and federal levels. Activities in this area include taking part in legislative hearings, lobbying and helping legislators developing legislation to improve liver health

No matter how you become involved, your participation in the Liver Life Walk or other ALF events and programs will make an impact on those living with liver disease and their families. Make the commitment to help in your own way today!
