Coach Brian Hamill

Brian Hamill, RFR CoachBrian Hamill

Brian is excited to be joining the Liver Foundation’s team for his second season.   He will be available during Saturday long runs and monthly Wednesday meetings to answer any questions you may have on training, racing, tapering, and 80’s trivia.

Brian has been coaching in the Boston area since 2001 with Community Running Association, a Cambridge-based club with 100+ members training for 5k, 10k, half-marathon and full marathons.  He has coached many CR members to successful debut marathons as well as Boston Qualifying times and personal best times.  Brian is certified as a USA Track and Field Level 1 coach, and has CPR/AED certification as well.

Most of Brian’s favorite coaching tips involve helping runners learn a sense of pace and a smart approach to race day.  A good knowledge of pace helps runners avoid going out too quickly and inevitably crashing (something Brian’s done a couple times himself).

He began his own running career in the 1992 Houston Marathon as a 20 year old junior at nearby Rice University.  Although Brian wasn’t a track or XC runner, a late night challenge at a weekend dorm party inspired him to try the distance.  Three training runs of 10, 12.5 and 15 miles (4, 5, and 6 laps around campus) were barely enough to see him to the finish line only after walking lots of cramped miles.  But he was thrilled with the crowds and support of fellow runners, and would be back again next year with smarter training.

He currently has finished 30 full marathons, and has a goal of running in each of the 50 states (16 so far). Brian has also raced other distances from 1-mile on the track in indoor meets here in Boston to 6-hour Ultramarathons in Vermont and Iceland.  His favorite race, though, is the Cape Ann 25k on Labor Day in Gloucester every year.

Living in Watertown Square means Brian can often be seen training along the Charles River running paths; most Sunday mornings he’s headed for an out-and-back to the Museum of Science.

By day, Brian is a chemical engineer for a family business in Lynn making waterproofing and specialty coatings for fabrics and leather goods.  He also enjoys the occasional pub trivia night, and hopes sometime to be on CBS’ Amazing Race show.
