Fighting liver disease has been a personal mission of mine for as long as I can remember. My father was diagnosed with Hepatitis C when I was very young. Over the years, he eventually developed cirrhosis of the liver and was ultimately placed on the liver transplant list by the time I was in middle school.
Many family friends offered to be living donors, and we found a great candidate in my mother's friend. Due to forces beyond anyone's control, and just days before the scheduled living donor transplant, we were told the transplant would have to be put on hold.
My father never received a liver.
Growing up, I saw how sick my father was getting. He was on countless medications. His skin and the whites of his eyes were yellow. He was always exhausted, and extremely irritable. But I never thought of myself as the girl with the sick father. He was just my dad. He loved me as much as any father loves his daughter. Perhaps even more, as he knew it would be unlikely that he'd live long enough to have all the moments most fathers look forward to with their daughters.
I am walking in honor of my father. I am walking in support of every father, mother, daughter, son, and friend who has been touched personally by liver disease.
Every step I take and every dollar I raise will make a difference in the lives of the 30 million Americans living with liver disease. By making a donation on my behalf, you will be helping the American Liver Foundation provide community-based education and prevention programs, protect the rights of people with liver disease, and fund critical research.
By making a donation you'll take me one step closer to my goal and take all of us another stride closer to a world free of liver disease.
