Dear Family and Friends,

I have been diagnosed with Autoimmune Hepatitis.  A disease in which the body's immune system attacks liver cells. This immune response causes inflammation of the liver called hepatitis.  Researchers think a genetic factor may be the cause but are not sure.  70% with this disease are females. 

This past year I was informed my liver was enlarged and it is due to the autoimmune disease. 

This disease is quite serious and gets worse over time if not treated.  There is no cure.  It is chronic and can lead to cirrhosis of the liver, eventually liver failure.

Liver disease is often unknown or misunderstood.

Here are some compelling statistics:

• 1 out of every 10 Americans is affected by about 100 types of liver disease.
• That is 30 million people - the number of people in the United States living with diabetes and cancer combined, and the same number of people who live in America's 15 largest cities.
• 60% of the 26,000 people who die each year from cirrhosis have no history of alcohol abuse.
• Nearly 17,000 people are on the waiting list for a liver transplant.

I have joined the Liver Life Walk to support the life-saving and life-changing work of the American Liver Foundation®. With more than 30 million people in the United States suffering from liver disease, including myself,  it is more important than ever to help the American Liver Foundation in their commitment to providing research, education, advocacy, and support.

Every step I take and every dollar I raise will make a difference in the lives of the 30 million Americans living with liver disease.
