As a participant in the Liver Life Walk, I'm helping to move forward the fight against liver disease and I need your help!

Before I start my story, I would like to share a letter that acknowledges someone very special to me:

There was this person that never met me,
Never knew me,
And would of course never know
That by a single act
In this person’s last moment in life,
Would become a hero to me.
This person was an organ donor
And I am a liver transplant survivor.
My name is Jimmy Alanis.
Upon this person’s passing
I was given the chance to live again.
I thank God every morning I wake
For the privilege to see another beautiful day.

On November 23, 2012, I was leaking fluid above my navel which was herniated so I called 911.  I remember getting to the hospital, talking to doctors and for the next 12 hours or so, everything was a fog.  The doctors told my sister, Linda, that if they did not find a liver for me, I would not make it through the night.  Fortunately, they found a liver.  I absolutely believe that this was a miracle. I was told that finding a liver so quickly generally never happens.  If it didn’t happen I would not be here tonight to share my story.

I was later awakened and told I have received my transplant.  From there, my new life began.  My social worker, Pamela Opper, tells me that I inspire others every day and give hope and encouragement to those who are facing the transplant process.  I visit patients on 5E who are either waiting to be transplanted or have already received a liver.  Dr. Rana came to the support group the other day and was thrilled to see how well I looked.

On behalf of myself, my children, my grandchildren and my great grandchildren, I want to thank my doctors: Dr. Christine Donnelly for referring me to UAMC, Dr. Habib, my liver doctors Dr. Rana, Dr. Porubsky and Dr. Jie, my surgeons who put me back together. I would also like to thank the nurses, staff, techs and physical therapists for making me sit up, stand up and walk.  And from the bottom of my heart (and liver) the American Liver Foundation whose support, hard work and research makes it possible for people like myself to be able to continue on in life.

And finally, I can never thank my family and friends enough for the live, faith, support and patience they gave me during this difficulty time.  I am doing well and looking forward to someday walking my 13 year old daughter, Eppie, down the aisle.  Once again, thank you, thank you, thank you.

Every step I take and every dollar I raise will make a difference in the lives of the 30 million Americans living with liver disease. By making a donation on my behalf, you will be helping the American Liver Foundation provide community-based education and prevention programs, protect the rights of people with liver disease, and fund critical research.

By making a donation you'll take me one step closer to my goal and take all of us another stride closer to a world free of liver disease!
