Liver Life Walk Chicago 2014

MICHAEL TWO LIVER MABRY JR.

Welcome to our Liver Life Walk Team Page!

Thank you for your interest in supporting our Liver Life Walk team. We are walking in memory of Mike Mabry who passed away in September after complications with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). Here is Mike's story as told by his mother, Margaret...

Mike was always a care free spirit and was always willing to help anyone. In 2007, after 10 years of health problems, Mike was rushed to Sliver Cross Hospital and was diagnosed withprimary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC).

In late December of that same year, Mike was admitted to the hospital where a team of doctors decided to transfer him to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Overwhelmed and facing death at the age of 30, Mike was told by the physicians at Northwestern Hospital that he would be placed on the transplant list. His best chances of survival would be a living donor. All family members were tested to be a possible donor match. Mike’s girlfriend, Lori, ended up being a perfect match. Mike and Lori made the decision that she would give him 64% of her liver. On February 6, 2008, after a 16 hour surgery, the transplant was successful.

In December of 2012 Mike's body started to reject the transplanted liver. One month later, Mike's doctors told him that he would need a whole new liver. Finally on January 31, 2013, a match was found.  After another long and difficult surgery, the second transplant was successful.

Months passed by and Mike began experience more health problems. Though, he was excited about the 2013 Liver Walk, which he and his family participated in for years and he wasn’t going to miss it!  Mike never shared with anyone how bad his health was but he may have sensed that it was his last walk.

A few months later in August, the doctors said, “Mike, there is nothing we can do. Your liver is rejecting aggressively and fast.”  Mike asked questions about his chances of survival and he was told that he had a 50/50 chance of making it through another surgery.

Mike was admitted back to the hospital that same month. While in the hospital, Mike met with loved ones and said, "I have made my peace with God. I am alright with whatever His will is for me. I am ok with it. I don't want to take a perfect liver that someone else can have and get the chance to live the life I have lived. God has truly been good to me and I don't want to take my body through the stress again.”

On September 19, 2013 Mike struggled to get ready for his doctor appointment. We made the last walk down the hall with him leaning on me. I kept the tears from coming. I knew what was to occur but I was still praying for my child. We arrived for Mike's appointment with his doctors, and they sent us straight to the emergency room and then to the intensive care unit. The doctor gave Mike 72 hours but God said September 27, 2013 would be his day.

As I sat by Mike's bedside, I kissed him and told him I loved him and that it was okay to go. He took a calm breath, still smiling. His last breath was peaceful, like a cold ice glass of water.

I miss Mike so much. I think of him every day. I thank God for Lori and the family who gave my son a second gift of life even if it was only for a short time. I got a chance to love him a little while longer. I remember his last breath as if it was mine, and thought about his tremendous strength throughout his last years. I will live my life as he would have wanted for me: happy, healthy and telling his story.
