We're running to fight liver disease!

My Story

Liver disease, in one form or another, has afflicted and severely affected numerous family, friends, and colleagues in my life so much so that I decided to take on the challenge of training for my 4th race, the 2010 Boston Marathon and 5th race, 2010 Chicago Marathon, while helping the American Liver Foundation in the fight against liver disease.

The fight against liver disease is a fight that I take seriously.  We've already seen the second largest December snowfall this winter in the mid-atlantic region which means I have many blistering cold runs in front of me but it will only make me stronger when I put on the Run for Research orange jersey!

Like the marathon, our battle with liver disease is a race against the clock.  Many forms of liver disease are preventable, and many more can be treated effectively if detected early meaning my sacrifice is all about raising awareness and inspiring others to make a financial sacrifice that will go toward conducting research.  Did you know that liver cancer is one of the few cancers on the rise in the United States today?

By making a donation you'll take me one step closer to my aggressive goal of $3,300 in 110 days (just think ... that's a little less than $30 per day) and take all of us another stride closer to a world free of liver disease!

Your generous gift will help the American Liver Foundation provide research, education, and advocacy to assist the 30 million people affected by liver disease in the United States.

Please support me in my journey!  Just click the "Click Here to Sponsor Me" or "Make a gift!" button.

My Legs Are Sore!
My body is starting to get back into full swing, but this was a sore week. During my transition time from one marathon to the next, I focus heavily on increasing my strength in the weight room, especially my shoulders and legs.
I pushed myself extremely hard on squats and lunges on Wednesday, and my legs are just starting to fully recover today. I'm sure it didn't help my cause that I doubled my leg session in the weight room with a speedy 7 mile the very next morning (thanks James)!
Another week goes by, is another week we raise money for liver disease research and awareness. Let's do it everybody.

Time to Start Training Again!
Now that I have had a few weeks for my legs to recover, it's time to start training again for the next marathon!
No rest for the weary when it comes time to supporting research for healthy livers, and I truly believe that using my gift of running to impact positive change in the world makes a difference.
I still have $900 to go to reach my original goal and only 3 more days to go before our next team milestone is here, so let's keep spreading the word to friends and family!

Thank You For Your Generous Support!
A sincere thank you to everybody that has supported my fundraising activities to date. We are driving close to my commitment goal for the Run for Research team, and I'm happy to have such dedicated support from my family, friends, and colleagues.
We are within such close reach to my personal goal and the RFR Team's overall goal of $1.3 million so let's continue to spread the word!
Once again from the bottom of my heart, thank you for your time and financial support for a mission that will certainly make a difference in my people's lives.

Post Marathon Monday!
Hey Everybody. Once again thank you for your continued support including those who came out to cheer me on during the race.
I unfortunately fell short of my personal goal for the race but sometimes you learn more about yourself in a "setback" than "success".
My official time according to the Boston Athlete Association was 3 hours 11 mins 55 seconds.
I experienced cramps at Mile 16 unlike anything I have ever felt in my 18 year running career. It wasn't pretty, but I fought through the pain, on and off, as best I could for the last 10 miles.
Boston's 10am start is a late start time and not like the usual 7:30 am or 8 am early morning go. Needless to say, I don't think I fueled up enough before the race.
You liver and you learn! That's what the Run for Research team is all about and just because race day has come and passed, doesn't mean the fundraising stops.
We have a team goal of $1.3 million and currently stand at $1.1 million. So let's keep fighting to improve quality of life for those suffering from liver disease and discover new approaches for ending all forms of liver disease!

4-5-3 Marathon Monday!
Hey everybody!
I'm signing in one last time before tomorrow's marathon.
Julia and I ran an 4 miles on Friday, 5 miles on Saturday, and an even easier 3 mile jog today.
I'm ready to go and kick some butt for liver research. I'm simply blessed to be healthy enough to run tomorrow's marathon so all those who will benefit from fundraising will be on my mind tomorrow when I attach Heartbreak Hill at mile 21.

13 Miles In The Last 12 hours!
I ran yesterday's 6 mile run around sunset which is about 8pm and came back this morning and ran today's 7 mile run about 8am. Not a shabby 12 hours!
The wind down before the marathon has begun, but there are still a few more runs to get through to keep my legs used to going through the motions.
It's always tough the last week before a race because it makes a runner feel antsy if they are actually tapering the correct way...and that's how I'm feeling even after today's run!

12 Miles on Sunday!
Sunday was Julia's shower but that didn't stop us from getting our last major long run in before we completely taper the week before the big race.
Up and going by 8am, we hit the trails around my family's house and knocked out 12 miles before the day really even got started. Legs felt good!
I think it's about time to dominate heartbreak hill for Liver disease research.

25 Mile Easter Weekend!
I hope you had a happy Easter Weekend everybody! I'm excited to say that I was able to fit in a 9 miler on Saturday followed by a 16 mile training run on Easter Sunday. Both runs were solo and it wasn't easy, but it's all in the name of liver research! Thank you again for your continued support.

Yesterday's 5x600 Track Workout
Julia and I got back on the track yesterday morning for one of our last workouts, and it was awesome!!!
All in all, it was an 8 mile day between warmup, intervals, and warmdown.
After a little sluggish start because of the early morning hour, my legs got under me and ended up have a satisfying go on the track.
My 600m splits were as follows (I got progressively faster as one should):
2:14, 2:12, 2:04, 2:03, 1:59

60 Mile Week (20 Miles on Sunday)!
Sorry everybody ... this past week was a busy one and involved a lot time running!
I think all the hard training is starting to catch up to me. I'm feeling fast but worn down from everything else putting pressure on me. I definitely need everybody's support!!!
Tuesday was 6x600m hill workout with a 4 mile warm and 2 mile cool down so by the end, 10 miles was easily covered.
I definitely far exceeded my expectations by running with the front leader of the training group. In fact, I think it was the best track/hill workout I've put together since leaving college.
I followed up that workout with runs of 6, 11, 4, and 20.
Only a few more weeks to go and a lot more money to raise so I'm going to have train extra hard this week to inspire everybody.

9 miles on Sunday!
Hey all,
I was out of town over the weekend, but I was able to squeeze in 9 miles on Sunday which means my last 5 runs totaled 64 miles!
It's a pretty exciting accomplishment, and I'm seriously starting to feel good with 3 weeks left to go. Watch out.

My Friday Night = 16 miles
Hey everybody ... I fell one mile short of my planned 17 miles today but it's because I ran out of road and daylight!
I was extremely tired on my run from 5 day stretch that has included runs/workouts of 20, 9, 11, and 16 miles! What a stretch ... I'm pumped!

11 Miles Today!
Less than 24 hours after my track workout, I put in 11 miles today! That pushes my weekly total to 39 miles in 3 runs.
As I promised in the beginning, I'm going to break my records for highest weekly mileage. I plan to run 5 miles tomorrow, 17 on Friday, and 9 on Saturday.
If all goes according to plan that would total 70 miles over 6 runs! ... I'll let you know if I make it!

9x800m Intervals on the Track!
Last night, Julia and I joined a weekly running group that meets on the track. The group is organized by a guy who previously coached at Rochester University (actually a member of Emory's DIII conference). The group includes runners of all different levels.
Much to my surprise, the workout went fantastic. It was only the second time I've been on the track in 2010 (the first was last week) and the first time it was fast.
I average 2 min 37 seconds across nine 800m (half mile) intervals. There was 2 mins rest between intervals and an extra 3 mins (so 5 mins) between the 5th and 6th interval.
I was extremely pleased as the top group I was hanging with our 2:30-2:35 marathoners!!! I'm far away from that level, but I'm working my tail off for the liver disease research!!!

Hitting the track tomrrow!
I'm really excited to get on the track tomorrow for an 800m (half mile) repeat workout.
It's been a long time since I tested my speed but it shouldn't take long for my favorite HS and College event to come back to me ... looking forward to updating you guys!

First 20 Mile Run This Year!
I'm definitely a bit tired today. Julia and I put in our first 20 mile training of the new year, but it was the weather that once again made it the most difficult.
It started with the rain and ended with the high winds that uprooted what seemed like every old tree in the area. We ran into a couple slight detours along the way and bunch of hit electrical wires but we made it.
20 miles in the books for Sunday and 6 miles on Saturday puts the weekend total at 26 and the weekly total at 55. Not a bad week but lots of running more to do.

12 miles this morning!
Apparently there's some bad weather heading toward the east coast in the magnitude of 2-4 inches of rain so it was important to get my mid-week long run in before the clouds hit.
Last night I ran 6 miles easy followed by a leg workout with the weights. I pushed the lifting harder than I have in weeks (3rd weight lifting session of the week, the other two upper body) so I knew this morning would tough.
Not going to lie, after about 9 miles this morning I was in some pain between my nagging left foot injury, right wrist tendon ache, and sore legs.
I thought about the hills of Boston and everybody counting on me to perform my best on April 19 in support of liver disease research and pulled through of course. I'm bringing my all to the marathon.

Tuesday 5 Mile Tempo Run
Today I joined a running group with Julia for the first time. There's about 40 people that showed up of various levels.
I jumped in with another runner who was aiming to run 6 mins per mile. I pleasantly surprised myself by running 5 miles on the track in 30:28! That's under 6:06 per mile and about 35 seconds under my Philly marathon race pace!
My splits were 5:59, 6:06, 6:11, 6:13, and 5:58!
I've got my eye on 5 miles in sub-30:00 ... let's see how I feel in 2 weeks.

Yesterday's 15 mile run got me excited!
My training run yesterday was not my first 15 mile or longer run during this training schedule. In fact, it was the 4th time I've gone 15 miles or longer during the last two months.
However, for the first time since my training started, my legs came alive. Both Julia and I were able to push the second and third 5 mile phases at or under 7 mins per mile which is beginning to approach race pace!
I can't tell you how excited I am for the impending daylight savings change and the warm weather that has recently rolled into town!

6 miles done!
My energy is really beginning to pick now that spring is around corner. I'm so excited that next weekend the clocks spring forward which means an extra hour of daylight to run in the evening/night (my preferred hour of choice) and then two weeks from is now it's officially spring with the vernal equinox!

The snow hasn't melted yet!
I set out for a 12 mile training run this evening and had to swap with tomorrow's run because there is still as much as 3-4 inches on snow on many of the bike paths and running trails.
I've trucked through it before but now that I am within 6 weeks or less of the race I don't want to risk tweaking anything like I did last month!
Wish me luck tomorrow!

Winter is not over yet!
So I'm in DC tonight at my family's house and there are flurries coming down ... I seriously thought winter might be done when March 1 rolled around but I was wrong.
The good news is that the snow is beginning to melt on trails like Rock Creek Park but unfortunately not enough so that I'm not forced onto roads for my long runs.
Julia and I ran 17 miles on Sunday in Rockville all on sidewalks and pavement. Oh well ... that's the price you pay to head to Beantown on Patriot's Day.
Less than 7 weeks to go!

40mph winds are coming to DC!
Hey everybody,
I'm supposed to run 11 miles today, and 10 miles Thursday. I going to have get my run in ASAP and might have to come back and go early in the morning the next day because the weather forecast is for 3-5 inches with "snowicane" like winds up to 40mph!
There's just no rest for the weary this winter in the Northeast, but that's not going to stop me for putting in the miles for the Liver Team!!!
Thank you for everybody's amazing support over the last few days ... we're all starting to get on a roll, myself included!!!

February Update!
I'm one week away from my birthday which means the end of February is near.
As I promised in my first post to my donation page, I've been training to the max but needless to say the snow on the east coast hasn't exactly helped the cause!
Despite nearly 50 inches of snow in DC and a couple feet in the NJ area, I've managed to keep the miles rolling, but icy trails and bike paths aren't the best for longer distances! Still, I put on the Brooks running shoes and made more than my fair share of prints in the snow (and a few snow angels along the way too).
The last two weeks of training have quickly increased in intensity. For example, last week was 16-rest-5-6-10-11-5.
The tendon behind my left knee is definitely strained from all the slipping and sliding side-to-side on the snowy-packed areas. Nonetheless, the show must go on.
Just today, I put on the tights, gloves, and wool cap for a 17 miler ... just a hair of 2 hours later, the lovely Julia (my typical training partner) and I were done. We're topping out around 50 miles per week right now, but we're going to start pushing toward 60 and 70.
Watch out DC, MD, VA, and NJ ... you might just see me running at a location near you to save more people's lives from liver disease!
I have a few pictures I've taken along the way of me training that I will be sharing with everybody soon.
I appreciate the support of all my friends and family. Thank you all!

The train has already departed
For the 114th Boston Marathon, I'm going to train on a 15 week schedule which started this past Monday, January 4th.
Now that I am a veteran of sorts at 26.2 miles, I've customized an advanced schedule by Pete Pfitzinger to meet my lifestyle. Between owning my business, traveling, and mentoring others, there is little time to run so when I have find a window of opportunity I absolutely have to take advantage.
My training will peak in the weeks leading up to the marathon at about 70 miles per week. Many weeks will be filled with 3 runs over 10 miles per day!
Each race since the Marine Corps in 2008 I have improved my time and I plan nothing less for the hills of Boston. With so many people behind me, there is seriously no way I'm letting heartbreak hill end my streak. My Run for Research teammates deserve nothing less than my best and that's what you and they are going to get.
So, I ask that you do what you can to assist me whether financially, spiritually, through a kind word, or otherwise. I need all the help I can get!
I pledge to run Sub 2:50 ... here I come Boston tea party!

Why Support the American Liver Foundation

  • 30 million Americans - one in every 10 - are or have been affected by a liver, biliary, or gallbladder disease.
  • Liver disease is the ninth leading disease related cause of death in the United States with more than 42,000 people dying each year.
  • There are more than 100 types of liver disease, with hepatitis A, B, and C being the most common.
  • Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, an obesity-related chronic liver disease, may affect as many as one in every four adults over the age of 18.
  • Hepatitis B and C infection significantly increase the risk of liver cancer, one of the few cancers currently on the rise in the U.S.
